An Enduring Memorial Tribute to Alan (“Uncle Al”) Ordway

It pained us beyond comprehension when Alan Ordway (“Uncle Al”), the revered, beloved and truly cherished Director of Winona Camps for Boys, passed away on April 24, 2013, far too soon for the good of the planet. Uncle Al was one of those rare souls whose very existence made our world a better place. His life was a special beacon for his family and friends, for the counselors and staff at Winona, and for literally thousands of campers at Winona (including both Steve Glidden and his brother Dan). In the words of his wife Michelle (Aunt Michelle), “He was truly one of a kind and so special to everyone he knew. It is rare to know a person who makes others better just by being around him. This was Al. We had a 50 year love affair. He was a gift to all of us and we will happily remember him for all of our lives.”

Since 2001, the SGF/Winona partnership has enabled nearly 100 boys – mostly refugees and those exposed to domestic or community violence – to spend a summer “on the shores of Moose Pond.”
